After you enjoy your meal, stay for a while to visit and play cards or other games with your friends. For menu choices and additional information, call the Hospital at (402) 947-2541 (402) 947-2541 before 9:30 a.m. the day of the meal.
It started with an idea. Then, a survey for those ages 50+ was conducted in our community to see if there was any interest to have a Senior Center.
"Meals were the easy part. Looking into Aging with Partners to get funding for those who can't afford it; to assist them financially to go out to eat and socialize",explained Jean Eggleston, Certified Dietary Manager, Warren Memorial Hospital. "They sometimes become recluse or shut-ins if they can't go out to eat. Jean, John Wilson and Deb Gates would like to meet with Aging with Partners."
As for another important part, the name, Jean and others went door to door to market the meals. According to her, "We had some name choices, and folks were asked which name grabs your attention - "Our Place" won.
"Our Place" officially opened with the first meal being served in May 2012. The menu started out as the following.
The continuing goal is to have a Senior Center in Friend. As Jean explained, "Perhaps a Senior Center can be established in another building so they have a place to go. I don't see why Friend couldn't have one like some of the other surrounding communities."
"Our Place" may have created Jean's department a lot of extra work but, as she said with a smile, "It is a lot of fun!"
"The heart and soul of "Our Place" is to plant the seeds for a broad community based Senior Center. The concept as visualized by Jean Eggleston, WMH Dietary Manager and other WMH staff members is to initially focus on developing programs while researching avenues for financing renovation of either an existing building or development of new space," stated John Wilson, CEO of Warren Memorial Hospital. "A successful first phase started summer 2012 offers nutritious economically priced noon meals at WMH every Monday and Thursday for area Seniors."
"Our Place" is a great place to get to meet and know new people. And, by the looks of things, it is sure to get even better.
